CULVER CITY - The West Los Angeles College baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday to walk off the Los Angeles Mission College Eagles and earn an 8-7 victory at home in the finale of a three-game Western State Conference South Division series.
Trailing by one with three outs to go, the Wildcats got a leadoff double from Jaxon Bernard, a walk to Nicholas Jacobo and an RBI-single from Khaleb Romero to tie the game. Two passed balls moved the runners into scoring position, and Jerrell Hightower's fielder's choice brought home Jacobo with the winning run.
Romero was the offensive standout of the afternoon, going 5 for 5 with two triples and an RBI. Lucas Salcedo drove in three runs, including a two-run triple in the first inning that gave West LA an early 3-0 lead.
The Wildcats built that lead to 6-2 through five innings before their defense fell apart in the sixth. Three West LA errors in the inning allowed LA Mission to score three unearned runs and pull within one. The Eagles tied the game in the seventh on a Douglas Zuniga RBI double, then took a 7-6 lead in the ninth on a Johnny Barnett sacrifice fly.
On the mound, starter Oscar Diaz held LA Mission to one earned run over six innings. Jake Neville came out of the bullpen to earn the win, tossing two innings in relief.
West LA snapped a four-game losing skid. The Wildcats, now 5-17 overall and 2-4 in the WSC South Division, host Ventura on Tuesday (Mar. 17) at 2 p.m. to open a three-game conference series.
